State firms on list of fastest-growing U.S. businesses
NEW YORK -- Sixty-one Connecticut-based companies are on Inc.
magazine's list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private businesses
in the United States.
Six of the state companies were in the top 500, and six more were
in the top 1,000. This was the first year the magazine listed the
top 5,000, but the 26th year for the top 500. Inc. ranked companies
based on revenue growth between 2003 and 2006.
Companies must have started 2003 with at least $200,000 in revenues
and $2 million in 2006.
MemberHealth Inc., with three-year growth of more than 20,000
percent, topped the list. The prescription benefits management company
is based in Solon, Ohio.
Glastonbury-based software company TopCoder was the highest-ranking
state business, at No. 45. Its revenues grew more than 2,400 percent,
to $14.8 million in 2006.
Others are:
- Virpie (No. 68), an information technology staffing business
in Southbury, with growth of 1,969 percent to $8.2 million.
- New Haven-based Higher One (No. 85), a provider of financial
services to universities, with growth of 1,748 percent to $16.5
million.
- Greenwich-based developer Antares Real Estate (No. 226), whose
revenues grew 1,008 percent to $35.7 million in the three-year
period.
- Mini Melts (No. 274), a Norwich company that sells frozen ice
cream pellets in vending machines, whose revenues grew 896 percent
to $4.7 million.
Area companies on the list of the top 5,000 were:
- Owl Computing Technologies in Ridgefield (No. 965), a defense
contractor providing one-way data transfer systems.
- Corporate event planner The Global Executive (No. 992), also
in Ridgefield.
- Danbury-based diplomaframe.com (No. 2,991), which makes diploma
frames with logos.
- Glacier Computer (No. 3,568) in New Milford, which makes rugged
computers.
- BranchServ (No. 3,864) in Bethel, which provides and services
physical security equipment for banks.
- Subsurface site assessment business Soil Testing (No. 4,046)
in Oxford.
- Klaff's (No. 4,755), the Danbury-based regional home retailer
and kitchen and bath designer.
